On 15 March, counsels Natasha Peter and Saadia Bhatty, respectively from the international arbitration groups of Gide's Paris and London offices, participated in the ICC YAF conference organised on the eve of the annual ICC pre-moot competition, on the topic of "International Arbitration and Corporate Social Responsibility: Current Issues and Future Innovations".
In addition to Natasha and Saadia, the speakers were Gemma Aiolfi, Head of Compliance, Corporate Governance and Collective Action at the Basel Institute on Governance in Switzerland; Alison Berthet, associate at Hogan Lovells in London; Barbara Ciaramella, deputy counsel at the ICC International Court of Arbitration in Paris; Govert Coppens, Associate at Volterra Fietta in London; Ana Gerdau de Borja Mercereau, Associate at Derains & Gharavi in Paris; and Tomas Vail, Senior Associate at White & Case in London.
In front of a packed auditorium of arbitration practitioners, academics and students, the speakers discussed the issues surrounding corporate social responsibility and business and human rights claims in commercial and investment arbitration. In particular, Natasha Peter presented on jurisdiction over human rights claims in commercial arbitration, and Saadia Bhatty moderated a panel discussing a recent proposal from a working group of international law specialists to use arbitration to resolve disputes of human rights abuses involving businesses, as well as issues related to corruption/bribery and international arbitration.
