Gide has gained recognised expertise and significant experience in data protection law, IT law and European law. Our firm has set up a multi-disciplinary team that is in a position to handle all data protection issues, particularly in relation to the proposal for a Regulation submitted by the European Commission and the new issues raised by Big Data, Internet of Things, Cloud Computing, e-commerce and m-commerce, as well as social media.
The Data Protection team is headed by partners Thierry Dor in Paris and Benoît Le Bret in Brussels.
Our Data Protection team regularly advises on issues relating to the implementation of personal data processing and compliance with national laws, whether inside or outside the European Union.
We also assist clients in implementing international personal data transfer solutions, in particular in the context of expansion abroad or the development of online or cloud activities.
Lastly, we conduct multi-country surveys on the various rules applicable to personal data protection for international projects.
Gide was one of the first international law firms to open an office in Brussels, in 1967. Our lawyers have developed an expertise in, and regularly handle, European regulatory procedures, and work closely with the European institutions (European Commission, Council of Ministers and European Parliament in particular).
With longstanding practice of European law and sector-based regulations, we assist our clients on interpreting and implementing European texts and put forward their opinion throughout the European legislative process. In addition, we assist in preparing and filing complaints with the European Commission regarding any Community law infringement that would be detrimental to our clients’ interests, such as the incorrect transposition of European law into national laws of Member States.
Our lawyers have played a key role in the most recent regulatory changes, particularly in the fields of insurance and financial services.
As such, since 2012, we have been acting on behalf of our clients in the adoption process of the European Commission proposal for a Regulation reforming EU data protection law. Additionally, we regularly advise our clients on the interpretation and connection between data protection and other European texts.
