It is worth remembering that when the firm was established in 1920, it was international from the very start. Pierre Gide was a member of the London Bar and collaborated with a team of lawyers whose practice was centered on international work.
Since then, Gide Loyrette Nouel’s strategy has been to develop as an international firm. Our first step in establishing a network was taken in 1967 when we were the first law firm based in continental Europe to open an office in Brussels. Today, we have a network of 24 offices, each of which has been established within the framework of a carefully defined and differentiated business model. This is focused on extending Gide Loyrette Nouel’s operations in specific markets:
jurisdictions with civil legal systems (in Europe and elsewhere), |
markets where Gide Loyrette Nouel is able to contend with its international competitors from the outset, |
political and cultural environments which facilitate our (usually French) clients’ local investment objectives, |
selected financial centres where there is strong client demand for our services. | Gide Loyrette Nouel’s offices in Central Europe and North Africa meet the first three criteria. This is also true of our Asian offices; for instance, China needs simple legal rules which are accessible to all. Gide Loyrette Nouel’s other offices, especially in London and New York, undeniably the world’s largest two financial hubs, were opened in response to Gide Loyrette Nouel’s need to provide its clients with comprehensive advice in the fields of capital markets and finance law.

We have deliberately chosen to grow our network organically and not to merge with or acquire another firm. Our strategy is to provide seamless cross-border advice through our own network of offices or through our close relationships with top “best friend” firms in the world's leading legal markets. There is a lot of evidence to show that this is what multinational organizations are looking for today, as borne out by our own statistics:
40% of the firm's activities take place outside of France, |
Out of the Firm's biggest 100 clients, which include corporations and national and international institutions, approximately half are overseas organisations. | Our strong international presence should not conceal the fact that our French heritage remains a core strength of the firm. No less than 38 of all CAC 40-listed companies are Gide Loyrette Nouel clients and French multinationals represent a significant part of our global network's client base. We include amongst our partners a former President of the Paris Bar and a former one was the Vice-President of the Judiciary Committee of the French Parliament, demonstrating Gide's uniquely high standing within the French legal profession. This has always been a hallmark of the firm and it continues to play a major role in winning business for the firm not only in Paris, but all around the world.

We are proud of remaining true to our partnership ethos, which promotes a culture of working together and reaching decisions by consensus. It makes sound business sense to support each other and solve problems together. We make the greatest impact in the competitive market outside our firm by being collaborative within it.
There are two critical factors that have allowed us to preserve this special culture for over 80 years. First, the international make up of our lawyers, representing 50 different nationalities, has allowed a rich range of cultures and personalities to flourish at Gide Loyrette Nouel. While our French heritage remains a core strength, we are undeniably an international firm in the way we conduct our business and the diversity of cultures that we embrace will ensure that we continually evolve in the future.
The second critical factor is our independent status. We remain utterly convinced that the independent culture continues to be the greatest environment in which to grow the best lawyers, develop partnerships with the best law firms and provide our clients with a world class service. This approach sets us apart from our competitors and it is something that should rightfully make us proud today and into the future.
