Richard Black studied law at Reading University and started his training contract in September 2009:
"From the moment I began work, any concerns I had about starting my training contract evaporated. I was immediately involved in an urgent matter. There was no time spent just observing or photocopying – which was exactly what I wanted.
What has most impressed me while working at Gide London is the trust given to the fee-earners. Everyone is expected to work at the highest level and therefore responsibility is given at an early stage. In a relatively small office, there is nowhere to hide. This means that trainees are given hands-on experience with the view to working at an associate level as soon as they are able to."
Manan Singh completed his training contract in March 2009 and is now an associate with the International Dispute Resolution & Arbitration Group:
"The difference between a training contract with Gide London and many other firms is the flexibility in the seat patterns. In a larger firm, the administration of moving a large number of trainees at the same time is complex and may mean that you do not have much say in where you sit or the type of work you are exposed to.
My experience at Gide was quite different. In my third seat I was involved in securitisation, capital markets, corporate and regulatory matters. I had to learn quickly to be very flexible in how I think about issues and to develop the ability to switch quickly between the big picture and detail.
To get the most out of my time in the department, I asked for, and was granted, an extension to the seat. Because I was able to build on what I learned in my first six months, I was of much more help to the senior lawyers. I built up a level of trust with my supervisor, such that he assigned me much greater responsibility – this was sometimes daunting, but always challenging and motivating."
Christine Rada studied business administration and management at Boston University before completing a law degree with the College of Law. She started her training contract in March 2009 and has just qualified as an associate in the Structured Finance Group.
"Since the start of my training contract, I have been continually provided with high quality work and practical experience in a friendly, yet professional environment. I have had such a variety of work – from contract law to insolvency to civil procedure – that my days are always interesting and I constantly have to use my initiative. Most of the matters I work on have international elements, giving me plenty of opportunities to work with colleagues abroad and to gain an understanding of the types of deals that our overseas offices advise on. There is a steep learning curve, but I have received ample training and support from my supervisor and colleagues which has made my responsibilities very manageable. The office culture encourages interaction between all the employees of the firm - office drinks and other social events are planned to promote integration between all the different departments. My training contract has so far been a very rewarding learning process and I look forward to receiving more quality training as the firm continues to foster my development as a solicitor."
